The fonds comprises original works by Douglas Sneyd, dating 1968-2000. Included in the fonds are preliminary sketches for cartoons and finished works published in Playboy Magazine. Generally, the cartoons deal with male-female relations and reflect the attitudes towards women and sexual mores held by that publication.

Also included in the fonds are political cartoons published, primarily in the Toronto Star and dating 1968-1974, under various titles. This series of works comprises editorial cartoons which examine timely issues such as the Vietnam War, separatism, unemployment and environmental concerns; magazine illustrations published in such general interest publications as the Star Weekly and Family Herald; and a series of news-related comic strips, entitled "Scoops", self-syndicated by the artist to both Canadian and American newspapers, dating 1978-1983.

In addition the accession consists of some supporting material in the form of business letters and memos between Mr. Sneyd and Playboy Enterprises International documenting business transactions and the submission of these proposed designs and finished cartoons. Some of the small notes document approvals, being initialed by Hugh M. Hefner founder of Playboy Enterprises, illustrating the business process of selection and final approval by Mr. Hefner. Cartoon production process is described in a publication donated, written by the artist: Doug Sneyd, titled: Unpublished, Vol. 1, c. Sneyd Syndicate Inc., 2007.

Sneyd, Doug, 1933- : Cartoonist, Illustrator, Commercial artist. Douglas Sneyd was born in 1931, in Guelph, Ontario. Largely self-taught, he began work as a freelance artist in the early 1960s, illustrating over sixty publications for Gage Publishing and creating illustrations for such popular magazines as Chatelaine, Weekend Magazine and the Family Herald. Sneyd's graphic design work led to a contract with Playboy Magazine with which he was under contract for over 35 years.

In addition to his Playboy cartoons for which he is best known, Sneyd worked between 1968-1983 as a cartoonist, primarily with the Toronto Star; his humourous drawings were published under various titles including "Sneyd Snickers". In 1978, he self-syndicated a news-oriented cartoon strip entitled "Scoops" which was followed by another series labelled "Headlines" which combined caricatures of famous people with quotes by them. A children's series, also published by the Toronto Star, was entitled "Wee Whimsy".

Sneyd's graphic advertising designs were contracted by such international companies as Kodak and Ford. In 1994, he produced a commercially distributed educational video on the subject of spousal abuse, directed towards a children's audience. See artist's file.

Douglas Sneyd is an internationally-known cartoonist, whose work includes both editorial, comic strip, and other types of cartooning. It was decided to acquire a small selection of his work for the magazine Playboy to demonstrate the full range of his career and the kind of subjects which he dealt with during the course of his work for that magazine.
