Fonds consists of textual records including correspondence, diaries, the Sato's publications and writings, records, scrapbooks, and texts pertaining to the Japanese Language School, a trip to Japan and the visit of Prince and Princess Chichibu, printed material, newsletters of the Japanese Immigrants' Association and Japanese Canadian Citizen's Association, oversize material, fine scrolls, and other items.

Fonds contains photographs primarily dealing with the Japanese Language School in Vancouver, B.C., [1918-1967]. Photographs depict school events and related activities.

Also included in fonds are sound recordings documenting talks with Tsutae and Hanako Sato in Japanese on education in Canada, 1928-1960.

Sat¢o, Tsutae, 1891-1983 : Tsutae Sato, (1891-1983) was born in the village of Tanakura, and began his teaching career at a village school there in 1907. In 1908, he enrolled at the Teachers' Training College in Tokyo and took a teaching position at Oowada Elementary School in Shibuyu, Tokyo. In 1917, the Japanese Consul in Vancouver transmitted a request from the Japanese community in Vancouver to the Japanese Foreign Office requesting the home authorities provide an additional Japanese-language teacher. T. Sato agreed to go. He arrived in Vancouver and took up his teaching responsibilities with the "Nippon Kokumin Gakko" (Japanese National School) and in 1922 became its principal.

He married Hanako (née Awaka)in 1921. She had been born in Wakayama Prefecture, had also graduated from the Teacher Training College in Tokyo and had been employed as a teacher in the Shibuyu district of Tokyo. She came to Canada both to marry T. Sato and to take up a teaching position with the Japanese Joint Language Schools. The Satos dedicated much energy to the founding of the Japanese Library and the Japanese Hall in Vancouver. They were also instrumental in organizing the Japanese Language Schools Society, embracing all Japanese-language schools in Canada.

During World War II anti-Oriental hysteria reached alarming proportions; it led directly to the closure of the Japanese Language School in Vancouver in 1941. The Satos, evicted from the Evacuation Zone with most of their fellow-Japanese, spent the next ten years of their lives on a farm near Lacombe, Alberta. In 1951, they returned to Vancouver, and once again took up teaching in the newly re-opened Japanese Language School. They retired from teaching in 1966, and continued to reside in Vancouver until their deaths in 1983.
