The fonds includes a variety of documents from all phases of the careers of Georges P. Vanier and Pauline Vanier. The oldest records concern their family. The remainder of the fonds documents their personal activities, the Vanier Institute of the Family, Georges P. Vanier's military and diplomatic career and his role as Governor General of Canada. Also included in fonds are sound recordings documenting speeches and inverviews with Georges P. Vanier, 1939-1967. Also included a few speeches by and interviews with his wife, Pauline Vanier, and his son, Jean Vanier, as well as the proceedings of the state funeral held for him in Ottawa, 1959-1967. Sound recordings have been divided into two series as follows: Talks and speeches; and Oral history interviews. In addition, fonds included moving images including footage of General Vanier, and a record of his funeral with footage of Adrienne Clarkson shown interviewing Governor General Vanier, 1959-1970s. Fonds also includes a video recording of Madame d'Entremont and Pauline Vanier's visit to France, 1990.

Vanier, Georges P. (Georges Philias), 1888-1967 : Governor General, Diplomat, Military Officer. The Rt. Hon. Georges P. Vanier was born in Montreal on 23 April 1888. He received his education at Loyola College, and Laval University (B.A. 1906, L.L.B. 1911). Before joining the Royal 22nd Regiment in 1915, he practised law in Montreal. After a distinguished war service career, he became aide-de-camp (A.D.C.) to Governor-General Byng (1921-1922). This was followed by his attendance at the Royal Staff College in Camberley, England. In 1925 he became commander of the Royal 22nd and served Governor-General Willingdon as A.D.C. until 1928. He then began his diplomatic career serving on a number of international bodies connected with the League of Nations and he attended the London Naval Conference. From 1931 to 1938 he was Secretary, Office of the High Commissioner of Canada in the United Kingdom. In 1939 he was appointed Canadian Minister to France. At the outbreak of war he returned to Canada where he served as member of the Canada-United States Joint Board on Defence (1940-1942) as well as being Officer Commanding, Military District Number 5. He was appointed Canadian Minister to Allied governments in exile and Canadian Representative to the French Committee of National Liberation in 1943. This later office took him to Algiers in 1944. In the same year he was appointed Canadian ambassador the France - a post he held until 1953 when he retired to Canada and served on the board of directors of various companies. In 1959 Major-General Georges Vanier became the first French Canadian Governor General of Canada. He remained in this office until his death in 1967.

- Donated by Thérèse Vanier, London, England in 1993 on behalf of her brothers and herself., Various documents were originally part of the Vanier Papers MG32-A2 donated to the Public Archives of Canada on 17 August 1972 by Madame Georges P. Vanier, and transferred to MISA 28 June 1976.
