Fonds consists of reports of visits of inspection conducted in Canada and Newfoundland by agents of the Phoenix Assurance Company of London, England, 1808-1809 and 1845-1846. The reports comment on the construction and character of buildings and the fire risks involved in Montreal, Quebec, St. John's, Halifax, Toronto, and Hamilton. Items of interest include a list of wharf properties in St. John's and Halifax; groundplan sketches of buildings such as Dow's Brewery and Distillery in Montreal, 1845; and commentary on business as Job Brothers and Company. Volumes 1 and 2 are bound photocopies. Volume 3 is a duplicate set of photocopies.

Phoenix Assurance Company : Established in London in l782, the Phoenix Assurance Company owes its beginnings to a group of London sugar bakers who decided to start up a new insurance company to compete with the two main London insurance companies of that time, the Sun Fire Office and the Royal Exchange Assurance. It is believed that they were probably inspired by the fact that some sugar bakers had successfully started up the Bristol Crown Fire Office a few years before. The company was originally nameded the New Fire Office. Agents for the Phoenix Assurance Company in Canada included Forsyth, Smith and Company in Halifax, and Gillespie, Moffat and Company in Quebec.
