Fonds consists of a nineteenth century family album of photographs, watercolours and a drawing depicting aspects of the life of Lt.-Col. Thomas Wiley including his friends and family taken in various locations, military officers and military units. Textual material consists of three reminiscences, "Through the Ranks for a Commission Fifty-Three Years Ago", "Bush Life and Frontier Service Forty-Seven Years Ago" and "The Visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada in 1860", written between 1881 and 1883.

Wiley, Thomas, fl. 1837-1860 : Originally from the Isle of Jersey, Thomas Wiley rose in the British Army to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. He was stationed at Quebec City during the 1837 Rebellion. In 1860 he was assigned to arrange accommodation for the Prince of Wales' visit to Canada.

Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Wily,(b. 1806 at the Cape of Good Hope, d. probably Ottawa after 1883) came to Halifax in 1834 as the colour and pay sergeant of the 83rd Regiment of the British Army. In 1837 he was sent to Quebec, gazetted Ensign and Adjutant, and raised and drilled the Quebec Light Infantry, a volunteer regiment. In 1838, he was made Brigade-Major of all volunteers in Quebec. In 1839 he was appointed Lieutenant and Adjutant to the First Provincial Regiment and served with it until 1842 when it was disbanded. In 1842 he was appointed Captain and Adjutant to the 4th Battalion of Incorporated Militia U.C., disbanded 1843. From 1843-1849 Wily served as Chief of Police in Montreal. In 1849 he was nominated Assistant-Quarter-Master General in the District of Montreal. In 1855 he became Officer commanding the 1st Volunteer Regiment of Canada (later Prince of Wales' Regiment, ultimately Canadian Grenadier Guards), remaining such until 1861. In 1860 Wily was responsible for accommodation, transport, etc. for visit of the Prince of Wales. In 1861 he was appointed Secretary to the Grand Trunk Railway Commission, also the Militia Commission. In 1862 he was appointed as Director of Stores and Keeper of Military Properties, in which position he was still serving in 1878. Wily was appointed Commandant in Ottawa during Fenian troubles, raising and drilling two battalions. Wily was Commanding Officer Civil Service Rifle Regiment, 1866-68. In 1870 he was responsible for procuring all supplies for Red River Expedition; likewise for the Red River Force of 1872 and 1875. From 1870-1872 Wily was responsible for taking over all British military properties in Canada on behalf of the Canadian government. Canadian Illustrated News, 2 March 1878, p. 134.
