Fonds consists of personal papers of Herbert S. Levy, including correspondence, memoranda, manuscripts, notes and several photographs relating to his service to B'nai Brith in the United States and as executive vice-president of B'nai Brith Canada, 1935-1985; his tenure as a citizenship court judge in Toronto and on the Metropolitan Toronto Police Complaints Board, 1978-1985. The fonds also contains photographs depicting a visit made by Mr. Levy to Israel during the 1973 war.

Levy, Herbert S., 1912-1985 : Herbert Levy who was one of the senior professional leaders in Canadian Jewish life, was born in Brooklyn, New York. He first joined B'nai Brith in 1944 and served as program director for the U.S. Northeast and Canada. He then served as the organization's national program director based in Washington, 1960-1966. He then moved to Philadelphia, where he became executive vice-president of District No. 3. In 1968, he moved to Toronto to become executive vice-president of B'nai Brith Canada, a position he held until his retirement in 1978. Levy continued to be involved with B'nai Brith Canada and served as Chairman of the International Affairs Committee. In that capacity, he led B'nai Brith Canada missions to Israel, Spain and Ethiopia.

After his retirement, he was appointed a Citizenship Court judge and to the Metropolitan Toronto Police Complaints Board.
