Fonds consists of textual records including rough notes and drafts of "On Champlain's Astrolabe", ca. 1878, 12 pages; a letterpress copy of "Quebec and Earl Dufferin's Rehabilitation of It", 1876, 17 pages; and a manuscript entitled "Canoeing on the Upper Ottawa", 1885, 3 pages.

Also included in fonds is artistic material including drawings, watercolours and reproductions of Quebec City and vicinity in the 1930s; the province of Quebec, New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Western Canada, Northwest Territories; and miscellaneous views of unidentified locales. Works by Alexander Jamieson Russell based on originals by Paul Kane and Milton & Cheadle. Some of the sketches were produced by Russell for his book on the Canadian Northwest, while others were produced while he was responsible as an agent for Crown Lands in the Upper Ottawa valley and elsewhere.

Russell, Alexander Jamieson, 1807-1887 : Alexander Jamieson Russell was born in Glasgow, Scotland and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1822. He became a surveyor and engineer, and eventually was employed in the Crown Lands Office of the Canadian government. He was the author of The Red River Country, Hudson's Bay, and Northwest Territories considered in relation to Canada (Ottawa, 1869) and of On Champlain's Astrolabe (Montreal, 1879). He contributed sketches to Alfred Hawkins' Picture of Quebec (Quebec, 1834) as well as to the Canadian Illustrated News in 1870 and 1871. He died in Ottawa in 1887.

His brother Andrew (1804-1888) was also a civil servant, and rose to the position of Chief Clerk of the Dominion Lands Department.

Textual material transferred in 1973 from Documentary Art and Photography Division. Textual material and works of art were acquired from Jenny Russell Simpson of Ottawa, Ont., daugher of Andrew Russell, Alexander's brother, in 1925.
