Fonds consists of photographs, ca. 1940-ca. 1985, by Ray Munro, his parents, or others dealing with his military, newspaper, and aviation activities, current events, celebrities, and his family. 51 of the photographs relating to Munro's aviation career were copies made from originals held by Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame, Reynolds-Alberta Museum, Wetaskiwan, Alta.; these are now de-accessioned.

Fonds also contains textual records consisting of scrapbooks, 1949-1970, relating to R.A. Munro's journalism careerm; and awards, 1969-1970, to R.A. Munro of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale.

Fonds also consists of sound recordings of the CBC radio programs Press photographer and News round-up, interviews by Hilda Brown with Munro about his career, and interviews with inductees into Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame. Also included are film clips of an expedition to the North Pole, parachuting, a DH Moth, sequences in flight from a single engine float plane at Peace River and of the 1955 Farnborough Air Show.

Munro, Raymond Alan, 1921-1994 : Raymond A. Munro, journalist and aviator, was born in Montreal and educated in Canada and the United States. He commenced flying in 1937 and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940. After the war, he followed a career as a flying newsman for seventeen years, retiring in 1958 as editor-in-chief of the Chatham, Ont. Daily News. He then formed Munro Aviation Company and flew as chief pilot on geophysical operations in northern Canada. Munro captured 28 Fédération Aéronautique Internationale world records and set 33 F.A.I. national records. He was named a member of Canada's Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973. Raymond A. Munro died 29 May 1994.

Note générale :

Photographs: 1970 negatives. All individually sleeved; most have some summary identification on the outside sleeve, written by R.A. Munro. While a deed of gift was sent to R.A. Munro, it was mistakenly not returned to the National Archives. An intermediary who apparently had the signed documents never brought them to the National Archives. It was, however, R.A. Munro's intent to donate all documents and rights in his documents subject only to the use restriction, which he applied to his other donations.
MIKAN Photo accessions 10626 and 10463 have been de-accessioned.
