Fonds consists of air survey reports, pilot's logs and certificates, a daily journal for 1936 along with lectures and booklets concerning aerodrome construction; files on the McKee Trophy, biographical data on A.D. McLean and John Armitstead Wilson, a former Controller of Civil Aviation in Canada; and microfilm of a scrapbook of newsclippings, photos and letters illustrating the career of A.D. McLean. Microfilmed material is located on microfilm reel M-2982.

The fonds also contains photographs of A.D. Mclean and other R.C.A.F. pilots, and aerial views of Canada, 1917-1950.

McLean, Alexander Daniel, 1896-1969 : A.D. McLean was born in Maxville, Ontario and moved to Innisfail, Alberta in 1907. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. As a second lieutenant in the R.A.F., he served as a flying instructor in England during World War I. In 1919, he studied engineering, joined the Canadian Air Force Reserve Officers and received his commercial pilot's license. In 1927 and 1928, he carried out extensive aerial photographic assignments in eastern Canada with the Directorate of Civil Government Air Operations. After being appointed to the Civil Aviation Branch of the Department of National Defence (DND) in 1929, he supervised construction of the initial sections of the airways system in western Canada. Between 1931 and 1935, he was acting superintendent of Airways and Airports, DND, supervising further construction of the airways system.

When the Department of Transport was founded in 1936, McLean became its first superintendent of Airways and Airports. In 1941, he was appointed controller of civil aviation for the Department of Transport, and awarded the McKee trophy. During World War II, he was responsible for selection, survey and development of airports for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and home war purposes. He was awarded an OBE in 1946 for wartime service. From 1950 until his retirement in 1962, he was a member of the Air Transport Board.
