Fonds consists of records relating Louis M. Lauzier's personal life and to his career as a federal government oceanographer. Fonds contains Lauzier's curriculum vitae, academic records (1940-1943), government passports (1960-1975), awards (1972, 1978, 1982) and five diplomas of Laval University (1937, 1940, 1942 and 1946) and of the Société royal du Canada (1970), Lauzier's Environment Canada (1976) and Canada Fisheries and Oceans (1982-1986) personal records, correspondence relating to Louis M. Lauzier Scholarship (1984), correspondence relating to Lauzier's retirement (1978), letters of condolences and obituary relating to Lauzier (1981, 1986), list of publications, volume of "Collected Reprints of Louis Lauzier, 1978" containing the various articles written by Lauzier, and of various notes, articles, publications. Fonds also includes invitation, newspaper clipplings, speech and other material relating to the naming of the "CSS Louis M. Lauzier" (1984).

Fonds also consists of photographs of Louis M. Lauzier in formal meetings and at his retirement.

Fonds also consist of a commemorative medal for the Brazalian hydrographical and navigation commission (1976).

Lauzier, Louis Marcel, 1917-1981 : Louis Marcel Lauzier, public servant, scientist and oceanographer, was born in Quebec City on 16 February 1917. Lauzier studied and graduated in physics and chemistry at Université Laval, Québec City (1941-1945) and New York University, N.Y. (1943).

In 1945 Lauzier began his scientific career with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. From 1945 to 1949, Lauzier was oceanographer for Atlantic Herring Investigation Committee in St. Andrews, New Brunswick for oceanographic research in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence and was recognized as an authority on the climate and ocean circulation in the Atlantic region. At the same time, Lauzier was also research advisor and consultant on oceanographic studies related to fisheries on the Scotian Shelf and Grand Banks. From 1949 to 1970, Lauzier was with the Fisheries Research Board of Canada, Atlantic Biological Station and held Associate and Senior Scientist positions. Lauzier went to Ottawa as Program Advisor (1970-1973), Program Coordinator (1973-1975) and Executive Secretary (1975-1978) for the Canadian Committee on Oceanography, Fisheries Research Board. Lauzier retired from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in 1978.

Lauzier was a member of numerous professional societies and was nominated to the Royal Society of Canada in 1970. He served as an advisor and member of many Federal Government committees in Canada and abroad. For his outstanding contributions to science in Canada, he was awarded the Centennial Medal of La Société de géographie de Québec in 1978.

Louis Marcel Lauzier died on 18 October 1981.
