Soulanges Canal, closed for transportation in 1959, extends 23 km between Lake St. Francois and Lake St. Louis on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Completed in 1899, with 5 locks, it superseded the Old Beauharnois Canal on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. This canal is now used for water power purposes only.

Trent Canal, a 386 km long waterway system built between 1833 and 1920, connects Lake Ontario, from Trenton on Bay of Quinte, with Lake Huron at Georgian Bay near Port Severn. It utilizes the Trent River to Rice Lake, the Otonabee River through Peterborough, the Kawartha Lakes and artificial channels to Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, and the Severn River to Georgian Bay. The system, with numerous dams and locks, has only 32 km of artificial channels. It was designed to shorten the shipping route between the two lakes, but has proved more valuable as a source of water power and as a route for recreational travel.
