Portée et contenu :

Fonds consists of photographs taken by Montreal Star staff, or commissioned by the Star that document people and events in the news, mostly relating to Montreal and vicinity. The bulk of the photographs postdate the Second World War, but there is a substantial number of pre-1940 photographs of such subjects as the Tercentenary of Quebec, the Royal visits of the Prince of Wales in 1919 and King George VI in 1939; the depression in Montreal; as well as the First World War and its impact on the city. The majority of the photographs from the 1940s onwards relate to political affairs, inlcuding municipal, provincial and federal elections, accidents, fires and disasters, Expo 67, the 1976 Olympics, and other major events in the life of Montreal up to 1980. Also included in the fonds are portraits of clergy and political figures which were published in the portfolio "Portraits Historiques."

Note générale :

According to ex-staff photographer Peter Brousseau, the following individuals were on staff with the Star (not freelance): George Bird, John Daggett, Morris Edwards, Mac Juster, Allan R Leishman, Paul Lagacé, Bill Robson, Paul Taillefer, Armand Favreau, David Leggett, Adrain Lunny, and Gerry Davidson.

Drawings done by Montreal Star illustrator Henri Julien and Star cartoonists Arthur Racey, Ed McNally, Doug Wright, Peter Pickersgill, and John Yardley Jones are held in LAC as well, in various fonds and collections.
