In this interview with Grace Lydiatt Shaw he describes first the creation of the Dumbells in 1917 under Captain Plunkett and their development during the remainder of the war. Next Ayre describes his own beginnings in theatre before turning to the post-war career of the troupe, the presence of Alan Murray and Ross Hamilton as impersonators, and the continued use of war sketches until the group folded.
