Television program hosted by Patrick Watson presenting proposals for five alternative routes for the extension of Highway 417 through the city of Ottawa in the 1970s. The history of Highway 417 and the problems and advantages of each route are demonstrated through archival footage, interviews, and graphics. Noteworthy archival footage of: demonstrators protesting the proposed Spadina Expressway in Toronto; aerial shots of Quebec's four-lane highway; a 1970 map showing 417 ending at the city limits; and former Minister of Highways George Gomme announcing the original 417 route in 1969. Aerial footage and graphics show alternatives recommended by the study group chosen by the Ottawa/Carleton region and funded by the province of Ontario. Members of the study group, a transportation engineer, and a planner are interviewed by Watson. Statements from representatives of citizens' groups and others include: Don Kay, Alderman, and John Barret of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. In an experimental approach, mock commercials by The Jest Society invite viewers to participate by voting through ballots in Ottawa newspapers. <60mn>
