Video recording of Tomson Highway during a speaking engagement in Kamloops, B.C. Highway talks to an audience about Canadian Native writers, the importance of reading Native writers; talks about his background and youth in Northern Manitoba; growing up speaking Cree and Dene languages; tells a set of jokes; talks in Cree language; explains the particularities of the Cree language and comparison with English and French languages. Highway presents Native mythologies and structures in comparison to Christian religion, Greek and Roman mythologies; the comparison between the Mother Goddess and the Christian God. He pursues by talking about his musical studies, the writing and composing of music, notably for his cabarets, various music themes and techniques he uses. Highway explains how he wrote and promoted his theatre plays and musicals, notably the "Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito"; Highway plays the piano theme(s) to his play as well as excerpts of his musical "Rose" (as well as explaining the story line). Highway continues to perform musical pieces, notably Brazilian Samba music. At the end of the recording, Highway tells some jokes and answers questions (notably the creating and producing of his plays notably "Ernestine Shuswap Gets her Trout", particularities of Native languages and sounds of the animal world; the importance of the Trickster character. < 1 h 13 min 52 s>
