Previous work commissioned by TDC in this area resulted in the development of a securement system for wheelchairs in railway passenger cars. The current project builds on the experience of that work. The objective is to enhance the safe transportation of wheelchair travellers through the development of a securement and restraint system that would have applications to several transportation modes. Although specific consideration is given to vans, the system should also be suitable for use in intercity buses and ferries. The concept for a wheelchair securement and passenger restraint system for vans was developed by Les Designers Douglas Ball Inc. The system is modular in design and consists of a wheel stop and securement arm, a lower back structure, a head and back support, and an optional seat suitable for use by any traveller. In the current project, the developers designed and manufactured four prototype units. One prototype was strength tested in a laboratory and two were evaluated in service in the Handicab vans of M&O Bus Lines Ltd. of Ottawa. The fourth prototype was installed in a van that was subjected to a barrier crash test at Transported Canada's Motor Vehicle test Centre in Blainville, Quebec. The unit withstood the barrier crash test with no damage to the unit itself or to the wheelchair. <12mn 35s>
