Alison MacKenzie participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister in 2000. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." MacKenzie was sixteen when the war broke out and just one year away from graduating high school. When she did leave school, she found there were few job opportunities but managed to find a job with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics after the 1940 census. She began to feel that she need to contribute to the war effort and enlisted with the Air Force in 1941. Her first posting was in Ottawa at a conference for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan where she was responsible for personally delivering documents to the embassies in Ottawa and to the Prime Minister. After the conference she was sent to a number of training schools to take various communications courses. She was drafted overseas and arrived in Liverpool on July 1, 1943. She was stationed at #6 Group Headquarters for the Canadian Bomber Command listening for emergency signals. She found everyday life to be a challenge and had to learn not to dwell on the deaths. After the war she was sent home where she noticed the difference between Canada and Britain. Canadians were less appreciative for what they had. Time in the service provided excitement, companionship, opportunities to learn about other people and serve ones country with pride.
