Abraham Metatawabin participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 15/11/2001 via telephone between Ottawa and Fort Albany, ON. Metatawabin provides answers in his native language and his son, Ed, provides an English translation. The interview begins with Metatawabin speaking of his father's experience during the First World War and how the Fort Albany community was disappointed in the military at the end of the war because of the treatment they received. This did not stop Metatawabin from trying to fight in the Second World War, however, he was unable due to his health. He is able to provide a look at life at home during the war, including rationing. He joined the Rangers in 1965 on the request of the chief at Fort Albany. The community had no objection to the Rangers, seeing the value in security. Metatawabin describes a typical year for a Ranger, the evolution of the program, and one memorable experience of getting lost in James Bay. Tape ends abruptly.
