The fonds concerns Lilburn's writing, scholarly life, childhood development, years as a priest and career as a teacher and writer. Also concerns his family connections and friendships/ network among many other writers.

Lilburn, Tim : Poet and essayist Tim Lilburn (1950-), was born in Regina, Saskatchewan. He obtained a B.A. from the University of Regina, an M.A. in Philosophy from Gonzaga University (Spokane, Washington) and a PhD in Philosophy from McMaster University. He spent several years in Nigeria before joining the Jesuit order in 1978. He left the priesthood a decade later and returned to Saskatchewan where he taught at St. Peter's College Muenster, SK. He went on to co-found JackPine Press in 2002.

Lilburn is the writer of acclaimed collections of poetry: Names of God (1986), Tourist to Ecstasy (1989), From the Great Above She Opened Her Ear to the Great Below (art by Susan Shantz, 1991), Moosewood Sandhills (1994), To the River (1999), Kill-site (2003), Orphic Politics (2008), Assiniboia (2012), and The Names (2016). His selected poems, Desire Never Leaves: The Poetry of Tim Lilburn, was published in 2006. He was also commissioned to write for dance, resulting in The House of Charlemagne.

Lilburn has also brought philosophy, poetry and ecology into conjunction, and much of his non-fiction work arises from his scholarship. He is the author of the essay collections Living in the World as if It Were Home (1999), and Going Home (2008), in which he relates the Western contemplative tradition (from Plato through Christian monasticism) to both contemporary poetry, ecology and politics. Lilburn is also the editor of and contributor to two influential essay collections on poetics, Poetry and Knowing and Thinking and Singing: Poetry and the Practice of Philosophy, involving other poets like Robert Bringhurst, Dennis Lee, Don McKay and Jan Zwicky. He also collaborated with Zwicky on Contemplation and Resistence : a Conversation.
Lilburn taught in the University of Victoria Creative Writing Program (2004-2022). He also organized many writing workshops including the summer institute in contemplation, writing and nature offered at St. Peter's by Lilburn, Zwicky and McKay in the late 1990's/early 2000's.

Tim Lilburn won the Canadian Authors Association Award (1995), Saskatchewan Non-fiction Book of the Year (1999) and the Governor General's Award (2003). He was a judge of the 2011 Griffin Poetry Prize. Lilburn was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2014. In 2017, he received the HOMER - the European Medal of Poetry and Art. Lilburn's work has been translated into French, Chinese, Serbian, German, Spanish, and Polish, and his work has been widely anthologized.

Annotations on cartons are as follows: "Studio" (vols 1-4, 13-16, 24-27); "From under desk in studio" (vols 19, 22-23); "Letters (unsorted)" (vol 7-8); "Thesis notes, & archival stuff, Bedroom #2" (vol. 28); "Furnace Room, to be stored" (vol. 29); "Early versions of Living" (vols. 30-31); "Tim's papers. Mss etc." vol. 34); and Papers (old mss, publisher's correspondence) (vol. 44). Neither consideration of physical placement or chronology yield series (although a rough chronological box key is available on demand). Series are based on the creator's description of the archives, the interrelations among documents and the content of files.
