Textual records (Électronique) Finding aid 12-218 is an unverified file list indicating file number, title, box number and outside dates. The title reflects the way that Transport Canada has historically organized and named its files. Titles begin at the Subject-level identifying the general subject, and then become more specific with each subsequent level in order to give a full description of the contents of a file. Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by various units within the Canadian Coast Guard, including the Commissioner's Office, National Strategies, Emergency Response and Preparedness, and Integrated Technical Services. Records in this accession include briefing notes, project proposals, meeting minutes, environmental reports, and research studies that document many of the Coast Guard's operational and strategic activities. They cover a wide range of topics including: the supply of goods to Eastern Arctic communities; the maintenance of navigable waterways; the Coast Guard's participation in various committees such as the Canadian Marine Advisory Council, the National Advisory Council on Oil Spill Preparedness and Response, the National Recreational Boating Advisory Council, and the International Arctic Council; internal task forces and working groups related to emergency preparedness and response; departmental review of the Canada Shipping Act and the Oil Pollution Prevention Regulations; the establishment of the Office of Boating Safety; publicity, education, and training programs related to boating safety; incident reports and response plans for marine emergencies, including oil spills; and rules, regulations and standards related to steamship inspections, boating restrictions, pleasure craft sewage pollution prevention, and construction of small vessels.

The majority of the records in this accession were created while the Coast Guard was a part of Transport Canada. Some records, however, appear to have been sent to and added to by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, who took over responsibility for the Coast Guard in 1996. These records, however, were returned to Transport Canada and eventually transferred to Library and Archives Canada.
