Fonds documents the career of Malcolm Sheraton Kuhring as a mechanical engineer for the National Research Council. Included are numerous records on subjects relating to Kuhring's work with the NRC's mechanical engineering laboratory, the Associate Committee on Bird Hazards to Aircraft, and the National Aviation Museum. Engine laboratory material includes documents related to tests on engine icing. There are also extensive records documenting Kuhring's work as Chairman of the Associate Committee on Bird Hazards, including field notes, papers, proposed prevention methods, reports, tests and data on birds, manuals, committee meeting minutes and correspondence between the Associate Committee and other countries regarding the bird problem. The fonds also contains draft chapters and a manuscript of Kuhring and H. Blokpoel's joint book, "Birds Hazards to Aircraft".

Additionally, the fonds documents Kuhring's wartime efforts with the B.I.O.S study of enemy science and technology during World War II and Kuhring's role in organizing the National Aviation Museum as its first curator.

Lastly, the fonds consists of photographs and technical drawings. Photographs include two photo albums and various photos of data, tests and engine laboratory activities.

Kuhring, Malcolm Sheraton, 1902-1976 : Public servant

Malcolm Sheraton Kuhring was born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1902. After working with Canadian Vickers Ltd. and Curtiss Reid Aircraft Company in 1928-1929, he joined the National Research Council's Division of Physics and Engineering in 1930. In 1931 he set up the engine laboratory of which he was the head until he retired in 1967.

During the 1930's, Kuhring and his staff participated in the establishment of the octane scale for aircraft engines in cooperation with the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1936, he initiated work on the icing of aircraft at NRC and in 1946, began studies of the icing of jet engines, which became a long-term cooperative project with the United Kingdom. He also worked on a great variety of other projects, including hydrofoil smoke laying craft for the Canadian armed forces, humane traps for animals, engines for vertical takeoff aircraft and bird hazards to aircraft.

Early in World War II he was sent to England as part of a team to survey aeronautical research and to recommend what part Canada could play in assisting with this wartime work. At the end of the war he visited Germany as part of a British Intelligence Objectives Sub-Committee (B.I.O.S) study of enemy science and technology. In 1953 he was loaned as a consultant to the Department of Defence Production.

From 1951 to 1953, Kuhring was Chairman of NRC's Associate Committee on Petroleum, and from 1963 to 1973 he was Chairman of the Associate Committee on Bird Hazards to Aircraft.

He played a major part in organizing the National Aviation Museum and served as its interim curator form 1958 to 1960. The museum drew on the great energies of Kuhring and the NRC engine lab for the opening exhibits.

Following World War II, Kuhring was awarded the M.B.E., and later, the Confederation Medal. In 1971 he received the Laura Taber Barbour Award of the Flight Safety Foundation (U.S.A.). He was a fellow of the Canadian Aeronautical Society and a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada.

Kuhring died in Ottawa in 1976.
