Broadcast News was established on January 1, 1954 to serve as a clearing house for news copy for private broadcasters. It is a subsidiary organization of Canadian Press and also uses AP, Reuters, and Agence France Presse, as its sources. All news is rewritten in a broadcast style and subscribed to by virtually all radio stations across the country. In the early 60s Broadcast News established an audio service for radio stations to complement its print material and CFRB in Toronto became the sending and receiving arm of this audio news service, designated Broadcast News Voice. In 1966 CFRB created its own audio news service, Standard Broadcast News, serving itself and a chain of stations across the country. Broadcast News Voice has exclusive Canadian rights to ABC. Approximately 95 radio stations subscribe to the Broadcast News Voice service which generates approximately 40,000 voice cuts (averaging 30 - 45 seconds each) per year. Approximately 2/3rds of this total is material originating in Canada with 20% of that total being sports.~Broadcast News Voice has accumulated virtually no archives or collection of historical recordings though an editor culls each month's production for a small selection of voice cuts which are retained for the assembly of year-end documentary programming. Broadcast News Voice keeps logging tapes of its entire production of daily voice-cuts for a period of 3 months after which they recycle their logging tapes. Beginning in January 1977 the Sound Archives holds the monthly selections of voice-cuts made by the editors of Broadcast News Voice. These selections will allow a researcher to follow how Broadcast News Voice has treated the major news stories of the year. This is an on-going acquisition. Broadcast News Voice supplies a copy of the teletype description of each voice-cut and these descriptions include the origin, name of reporter or public figure, duration, subject descript ion, out-cue, and date (usually). As of 2015 these descriptions could not be found descriptions have been based on existing simplified finding aids.
