The majority of records in this accession pertain to the Fraser River Flood Control program, jointly administered by Environment Canada and the Ministry of the Environment of the Province of British Columbia. The program, generally referred to as the Canada-British Columbia Fraser River Flood Control 1968 Agreement Project, include bank protection, reinforcement of dykes, drainage projects, piezometer monitoring, and assessments of dams and pumpstations. The records consist mainly of proposals and project tenders, reports, expenditure claims, operating and maintenance instructions, work data books, correspondence, and contracts relating to flood control. The areas affected were Abbotsford (formerly Sumas), Barnston Island, the Burnaby-Trapp Road, Chilliwack, Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, Delta (Boundary Bay), Glenn Valley, Grand Canyon (Fraser River), Harrison Lake, District of Kent, Maple Ridge, Matsqui, Mission, New Westminster, Nicomen Island, Norrish Creek, the Okanagan, Pitt Meadows, Richmond, and Surrey.
The accession also includes the following: Water Planning and Management Pest Fund records relating to the monitoring of pesticide and other contaminant levels in the groundwater and soil, proposals for modifications to the use of pesticides, reports on the implementation of a new federal pesticide regulation system, 1992, and records related to water quality analysis and the impact of septic effluent on groundwater; air pollution records; records and photographs pertaining to the Kootenay River Reclamation Farm, a project designed to reclaim farmland flooded by the Kootenay River, 1930-1933; records pertaining to the Columbia River Treaty; flowage reports, geological reports on damsites, seismic reports, and materials of construction reports; minutes of the Canada-British Columbia Policy Liaison Committee, the Canada-United States Columbia River Negotiations, and the International Columbia River Engineering Board and Committee; correspondence files; and various other water planning and management records.
Also contained in this accession are International Joint Commission (IJC) records relating to, among other matters, Kootenay Lake studies, Osoyoos Lake Studies, International Streams Co-operation, the West Kootenay Valley Power and Development Company Ltd., and the Kootenay and Skagit Rivers.
