The series comprises the photograph albums of Amelia B. Biss (nee Johnstone) and her daughter Irene Spry, and portraits of the Biss, Sykes, and Spry families. The albums of Amelia Biss chronicle her personal and family life in South Africa, 1904-1909; India, 1909-1919; South Africa, 1919-1924; and Kenya, 1924-1945. They show, in particular, the growth and development of her family and the career of her husband, Evan E. Biss, as a colonial educator and administrator. The albums of Irene Spry show her youth; her time studying and teaching at the University of Toronto in the 1930s; her trip to Kenya in 1932; and her family life with Graham Spry, from 1939 to the early 1960s.

The series also includes portraits of Irene Spry's ancestors, including a daguerreotype of John Sutcliff Biss and Robert Latter Biss, and an ambrotype of the family of James Sykes and Frances Lawson (including Annie Eliza Sykes, who later married Robert L. Biss).
