This is a preliminary record, please consult the linked accessions. Sub-series consists of air occurrence files (block 825) from regional offices as well as from the Head Office. Generally, the regional offices created and managed the initial occurrence investigation file. The regional file is generally more concerned with the conduct of the investigation, including investigation and administrative records of the investigating officers, their liaising with other authorities involved in parallel investigations (police and lower levels of government), and audio recordings and photographs related to the occurrence. A parallel Head office (HQ) file is always opened as well for each occurrence. The HQ file is more concerned with the content and conclusions of the investigation. However, in some cases, where HQ takes a special interest in an occurrence, HQ may create and manage the sole investigation file.

A typical air occurrence file will follow a prescribed format, such as 825-A92A0003. '825-A' refers to an Air Occurrence file, '92' refers to the year of the occurrence, 'A' refers to the region, and '0003' is a number assigned consecutively by the investigating office for each new occurrence of the year (in this example, the 3rd of 1992). Regional records may or may not be identified by an R at the beginning of the file number, ex. R825-A92A0003 (regional) and 825-A92A0003 (HQ).
