Fonds predominantly comprises original editorial cartoons by Merle Tingley, the majority of which were published in the London Free Press. The works cover national, provincial, and international events and personalities. Other cartoon material includes originals from his series entitled "This Doggone Army" which were published during WW II and works from his coverage of the Cyprus peacekeeping mission which he covered for the Free Press., Published material is primarily related to the art of caricature and cartoonists. Publications include 24 editions of "Raemakers' Cartoons" and 11 editions of "Fragments from France" which were published during WW I. As well, there are various published collections featuring cartoonists such as Duncan Macpherson. Several dozen editions of "Cartoon Profiles" and the AAEC publication "Notebook" were included.., Tingley was very involved in the associations relating to cartooning in Canada and the United States. His fonds includes original works by his Canadian colleagues Roert Chambers, Len Norris, Jack Boothe and Jack MacMellon. American cartoonists include Alvin Smith, Vern Greene, Chick Young, Walt Kelly, Zack Mosley, Bill Kresse, Robert Drebelbis, Art Wood, Robert Sullivan, James Burnett Ivey, and Joseph Lee Parrish..

Tingley, Merle Randolph, 1921-2017 : Merle Randolph Tingley was born in Montreal in 1921. At the young age of eleven, he won a department store drawing contest and later studied drafting in high school. He enlisted during the first months of the Second World War and was transferred to the Signal Corps where he was put to work illustrating training manuals. In 1941, he began work on two Canadian Army magazines, providing them with humerous cartoons in a series entitled "This Dog-Gone Army" in which soldies of various rands and types were presented as dogs. He later created a character while in the army of occupation in Germany which he called "Occupation Oscar" for the Maple Leaf.

His military career ended in 1946 and he returned to Canada. An army friend encouraged him to sign on with the London Freed Press and, by 1948, he was the paper's first regular cartoonists. Shortly thereafter, he introduced his perennial mascot "Luke Worm". Tingley also served as a war correspondent and put on chalk talks for troops all over the world, including Korea, the Far East, the Middle East, the Congo and in Cyrpus - for the many peace-keeping missions world-wide.

In 1955, Ting won a National Newspaper Award and a World Newspaper Forum award in 1960. Beyond cartooning, the artist worked commercially and illustrated two children's books. His cartoons were syndicated to other papers and expanded to forty-eight by 193. He retired that same year. Ting died in June of 2017.
