Biography of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, born Nomzamo Winifred Madikizela, who was born in 1936, the sixth girl in a row of a rural school teacher. In 1953, she left to study in Johannesburg as a social worker, where she met and wed Nelson Mandela a few years before he was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1962. After this, she became more active in the anti-Apartheid struggle and was also imprisoned. Starting in 1969, she spent eighteen months in solitary confinement at Pretoria Central Prison. Later, she was exiled for some years to the small and remote town of Brandfort. When she came back to Soweto to start again her activism, she took part in the internal struggle between the factions, advocating violence. This included in 1989 the kidnapping and murder by her bodyguards of an alleged traitor within the African National Congress (ANC) party. After Nelson Mandela was released in 1990 and sought to become President of South Africa, he divorced from her, under political pressure to the effect that she would not be fit to be the First Lady. In 1997, she appeared before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of South Africa to apologise for the violation of human rights by her bodyguards. <107mn 2s>
