In the early part of the nineteenth-century, canal surveying, construction, and maintenance was administered by government-appointed commissions. Commencing in 1839 in Lower Canada and shortly thereafter for the whole of United Canada (1841), administrative responsibility for canals was assumed by the Board of Works; the Board's successor, the Department of Public Works, retained control of the canals for a period of twenty years following 1859. In 1879, responsibility for canals was transferred from the Department of Public Works to the newly-created Department of Railways and Canals; in 1936, the newly-created Department of Transport absorbed the Department of Railways and Canals, including the administrative responsibility for all matters related to canals. Finally, on 1 June 1972, the responsibility for the operation, maintenance, and repair of all non-commercial canals was transferred to Parks Canada, Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, under the Transfer of Duties Act and Order-in-Council 1972-1124.
The records in this accession relate principally to the canals transferred to the jurisdiction of Parks Canada in 1972, including Trent, St. Peters, Ste. Anne de Bellevue, Richelieu, Beauharnois, Carillon, Murray, Grenville, and Rideau. The records deal with water lots, leases, rights of way, privileges, and bridges. Also included is a brief history of the Trent and Severn Water Control System, and a list of bridges over all canals in Canada.
In addition, the accession contains a list of bridges for the Welland and Sault Ste. Marie canals, complete with photographs, plans, and specifications.
