Recorded at the interviewee's home in Sudbury, Ontario. Esther Hakala was born in southern Finland in 1907. She grew up in a lumber village. There were 6 girls and 4 boys in the family. Her father was a blacksmith and her mother stayed at home. She worked as a domestic for a Swedish family in Finland. Then worked in a paper factory in Finland at age of 15. Came to Canada in 1928 by herself at the age of 21. Worked as a domestic for a famiy of four. Her employer was a real estate broker. Stayed for about a year with this family. She discusses the working conditions she experienced as a domestic.
