Interview of Dr James B. Kirkpatrick as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on the afternoon of 26 June 1979. Kirkpatrick talks about: his early upbringing in Saskatoon; undergraduate education in Agricutlure at the University of Saskatchewan in 1926; his shift to Arts and then to Education, graduating in 1930; his involvement with athletics and influence of Joe Griffiths; his first teaching experience at Melfort, Saskatchewan from 1930 to 1933; the graduate study at the University of Saskatchewan from 1933 to 1934; teaching experience at Bedford Road Collegiate in Saskatoon; graduate study at Columbia University, obtaining a doctorate in 1942, making him the second in Canada after Doris Plewes; co-authoring the text entitled "Physical Fitness" with Joe Griffiths, one of the first curriculum texts written by Canadians; his appointment to Edmonton Normal School from 1940 to 1942; comments on the program developed there; service as a Physical Training Officer with the RCAF from 1942 to 1944; his appointment as Director of Physical Fitness and Recreation for the Province of Saskatchewan following the Second World War; the emphasis placed on recreation; the impact of the National Physical Fitness Act of 1943; thoughts on the repeal of the Act of 1943; the program in Saskatchewan after the repeal of the Act; the organization of interscholastic athletics; his experiences on the National Physical Fitness Council in the 1940s; his appointment to McGill University in 1948 to succeed Dr. Arthur S. Lamb; his appointment as the Dean of Education at the University of Saskatchewan in 1956; recollections of the early days of the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union and service as the president in the mid-1950s; his involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER) in the 1950s;professional associates considered to have made significant contributions to the field, including: Stan Rough; Jack Lang; Stan Spicer and Hugh Noble; the first awards presentation at the CAPHER Convention in Montreal in 1948; the Ian Eisenhardt affair; the Parks and Recreation Association of Canada and its relationship to CAPHER; the different way recreation is organized in the western provinces than in the Maritime provinces; the development of recreation in the western provinces and his personal philosophy of recreation; recollections of physical education summer courses organized by the Saskatchewan government in the early 1940s; early beginnings of the undergraduate courses in physical education at the University of Saskatchewan with Ethel Mary Cartwright; thoughts on significant accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including: the acceptance of physical education as a profession; improved facilities; increased success in competition internationally; the improved quality of coaching; coaching certification; and the stronger voice of sports governing bodies; and some philosophical words of advice to the profession.
