Interview of George Grant, as part of a series of oral history interviews of pioneers in Canadian physical education, sport and recreation. The interview was conducted by Dr. Stewart A Davidson in Victoria, British Columbia, on the afternoon of 21 May 1979. Grant talks about: his early days in Burnaby, B.C.; his introduction to sports and games; Scouting from 1921 to 1934; activities while at school in Burnaby in the 1920s; his professional preparation at the University of British Columbia (UBC); first teaching experiences at Lilloet, B.C. in 1932; teaching at Burnaby South in 1934; salaries in the 1930s; program of activities; his experience with the YMCA in New Westminster; the Strathcona Trust program in B.C.; summer school courses at New Westminster in 1937; the Pro-Rec program in B.C., its early development and influence in B.C. communities; teaching at Rossland, B.C. in 1941 to 1943 and responsibilities within the Pro-Rec program; reminiscences of experiences as the Supervisor of Physical Education in the Victoria school system; the program evolution; the introduction of specialist teachers; facilities available in Victoria schools; the building program in the 195os and 1960s; the first Commonwealth Games conference in Vancouver in 1954; exchange teaching in Britain in 1959-1960; the development of the teaching program for elementary school children in Victoria; the introduction of the Red Cross Water Safety program; his involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAHPER); his responsibilities as the National Executive Director; the beginning of the Victoria Branch; further comments on the Strathcona Trust program in B.C.; the effect on elementary school physical education in B.C. of the change from Normal School control to university control; involvement with organizations such as Red Cross Water Safety, the National Film Board and Parks and Recreation; efforts at promoting physical education using radio, television and newspapers; professional associates who have made major contributions to the profession in Canada in the 20th century, including Nancy Ferguson; Lorne Brown; Ernie Lee; Fred Martens; Bob Osborne and Gordon Brandreth; and major accomplishments within the profession in Canada during the 20th century, including; the improvement in facilities; teacher training; the growth of professional associations and the introduction and growth of outdoor education programs.
