Instructional film depicting the duties and working conditions of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Northern Service in the Mackenzie River District of the Northwest Territories. Includes footage of the RCMP sub-divisions at Fort Smith and Aklavik, Northwest Territories, and clips of detachments at Fort McPherson (also known as Teetl'it Zheh), Tuktoyaktuk and Tsiigehtchic (formerly known as Arctic Red River), Northwest Territories. Noteworthy segments include: RCMP winter patrol by dogsled from Aklavik to outlying detachments and native (Indigenous) settlements with patrol officer and an Indigenous guide; aerial views of detachments; other related RCMP duties including providing family allowances for Inuit mothers to supplement their income derived from fur trapping; a memorial in the cemetary to members of the RCMP Dawson Patrol who perished in 1911 en route from Fort McPherson to Dawson City; trees marking the grave of Albert Johnson also known as the Mad Trapper; roles of Inuit special constable as guide and interpreter; Inuit special constable feeding sled dogs and preparing sled runners with axe; patrol makes a call on a Loucheux (Gwich'in) family who makes its living on trapping muskrat and other trapping animals; call on trapper, Frank Carmichael and then Fort McPherson, trapper, missionary and former half-breed (Indigenous, possibly Metis?) special constable Charlie Stuart who guided the 1911 relief patrol; Louis Cardinal, former guide on the 1898 Dawson trail; guide breaking trail with snowshoes for dogs and sleds; Tsiigehtchic (formerly known as Arctic Red River); return trip to Aklavik; Tuktoyaktuk HBC store, school, Anglican Mission, Catholic Mission; Eskimos (Inuit) employed herding reindeer - in 1929 Lowman Brothers, in agreement with the Canadian Government began herding reindeer and then tracking almost 3,000 reindeer; domestic scenes at detachment - bathing, washing clothes, baking bread, past times, married quarters and special constable and his family in Barracks Square; responding to fire alarm; Aklavik - Catholic Mission with schools; Anglican Mission and All Saints Cathedral; Anglican hospital; and residential school; children playing Eskimo (Inuit) whip game; Government day school; Government administrative building; hotels; HBC trading post; and Native (Indigenous) girl showing a belt with beaded handiwork; Easter church services given in different languages for the Loucheux (Gwich'in) and Eskimos (Inuit); local radio station. Ice break-up in spring from Mackenzie Delta; summer patrol checking on welfare of Indigenous people; aerial view of Fort Smith; and two officers heading home after their tour of duty over several years.

1. Film preamble reads as: "A member applying for Northern Service must undergo a strict Medical examination, have a keen desire for Northern service, a quest for adventure which will enable him to endure personal discomfort or loneliness, and be prepared to remain in the North for a minimum period of three years. In addition to regular service work, a Northern man must, through actual experience, become proficient in handling dogs, canoes and larger boats which demand some knowledge of seamanship.The first year of his Northern Service is spent learning the work relative to the North and the habits and characteristics of the natives (Indigenous Peoples)."~2. Loucheux is an older dialect of the Gwich'in language and is considered a derogatory term meaning "squinters".
