Press conference concerning the canadian postal service held by Shirley Carr, President of the Canadian Labour Congress; Robert McGarry, President of the Letter-Carriers Union of Canada; Jean-Claude Parrott, President of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers; and Denis Gagnon, President of the Union of Postal Communication Employees of the Public Service Alliance. Following opening statements (in English and in French) the speakers respond to questions from the press gallery. Among issues raised are: the dangers of privatization, deregulation and free trade and problems specific to the postal service in Canada; the deficiencies of services offered by the Post Canada Corporation especially as they relate to the handicapped and elderly; the cost-effectiveness of proposals made by unions represented at the conference and the unresponsiveness of the Post Canada Corporation to these proposals; and the potential benefits of electronic bulk mail and technological improvements. (Problems with quality of recording at start of conference; question period ends abruptly)
