Documentary about Canada’s abortion law. It reviews the past 17 years of Section 251 of the Criminal Code. Interviewees include: a senior counsel with the federal Department of Justice; Dr. David Carr of the McMaster University medical centre’s therapeutic abortion committee; Dr. Clarence Ginther, the vice-president of clinical development at Calgary Foothills Hospital; Dr. Nikki Culodny of the Morgentaler Clinic; a 27-year-old single woman who was refused an abortion by a doctor at Calgary Foothills Hospital; Dr. Frances Wren of Calgary General Hospital; Dr. Henry Morgentaler’s lawyer Morris Manning; and Dr. Marian Powell. There is actuality of a woman undergoing an ultrasound at the Morgentaler clinic in Toronto, having a discussion with a doctor there and undergoing an abortion. There is also audio of a man opposed to abortion pleading with another man he has seen leaving the clinic. Subjects discussed include: the attitudes of doctors to performing abortion; the awkwardness of therapeutic abortion clinics; the decision by some doctors to stop performing abortions because they were not allowed to extra bill for it; the treatment women receive in the Morgentaler clinic and elsewhere; and access to therapeutic abortions. <29mn 14s>
