This film is a recreation of the move by the Toronto Arts and Letters Club to it new club on Court Lane in September 1910. The intertitle explains: "On November 8, 1909, the Club entered a garret over the "Brown Betty". In September 1910 the Club was ejected because it wanted to keep on paying rent. The old court house behind No. 1 Police Station was rented at $900.00 a year with $1200 out of $44.50 to pay for improvements not including the great fireplace. On a Saturday afternoon in 1910 began the Grand Trek to Court Lane when all the club was on a One-Horse-Wagon ... and Defries not yet treasurer".~The visuals show the exterior of the Brown Betty Luncheon and Tea Room. Men are gathered on the street, removing furniture.~The intertitle reads: "After the last lunch ..."~A group of men are shown moving furniture on a wagon. A trolley car is in the background. The intertitles identify Court Lane and a "Black Maria". A man drives a horse and wagon carrying what apparently is the club's furniture. Three policemen walk past. Men unload the furniture. An intertitle identifies the scene as "King Street 10 am, Secretary carrying lino ..." A man is shown carrying a roll of linoleum. The next intertitle says "... Mrs. 'All had to buttonhole an extra waiter ..." and men are shown at a table, eating and drinking. The next intertitle reads, "Ray Mitchell started Canada's first little theatre in the old Club with Shadowy Waters". Men are shown unloading props from a cubbyhole. The final intertitle reads, "... Kyle goes aloft to coax Henry B. ... rehearsal of Dunsany's Glittering Gate". A man is shown on a stepladder at the cubbyhole. Men are shown on a street, pretending to have an argument. Next are the words "The End" but more footage follows, likely spliced from a separate production.~"The Boar's Head Procession at Ernest MacMillan's" shows a procession of men with candles around a dinner table.~"The Last Meeting of the 1932 Executive" shows a large group of men eating food at a dinner table.~A man identified as Bob Defries is shown talking and sitting in a chair.~Cecil King drinks and talks.~Manny Hahn drinks tea and talks.~Booker, Stone and Bowles are shown sitting, talking and drinking.~Ernest MacMillan is shown playing Bach on the piano.~Ivor Lewis is shown seated and talking.~The rest of the footage, probably spliced from another roll, has no intertitles: a man in a black suit and white tie talks; a man talks; two men talk while reading over a paper; four segments of different men talking; two men talk and laugh; a large group of men, possibly an audience; men talking; a young man talks; another young man talks; a man talks; another man talks; a man reads; another man reads; a group of men sit and talk; a band plays brass instruments; a ballet stage production; a man talks; another man talks; men talking; a man is seen fishing and holding up his catch; a man, outside a forest, talks; a man is shown working with a chisel; a man and boy walk outside a forest; and a man picks flowers.

1. A kinescope copy of this footage is listed in the CBC kinescope inventory record as Mathew's (sic) Collection.~2. The rights to this material are held by the estate of Chuck Matthews, who died in 1990, represented by his son Graham Matthews (see related footage in the Arts and Letters Club fonds).~4. The Arts and Letters Club was founded in Toronto in 1908 an association for male musicians, artists, and others participating in the arts or as patrons of the arts.~4. The club hosted poet Rupert Brooke in July 1913.~5. It had a prominent role in fostering the work of the Group of Seven, holding an exhibition of J.E.H. MacDonald's work in 1911, Tom Thomson's work in 1915, and the Group of Seven in 1920.~6. Its February 1927 exhibition of paintings by Bertram Brooker was the first exhibition of abstract art in Canada.~7. It started putting on annual springtime drama revues in 1930 and performed plays by Merrill Dennison and John Coulter.~8. Its first club house was the Assizes Building, formely the Court House, on Adelaide Street. It moved in 1920 to St. George's Hall at 14 Elm Street.~9. Among its members over the years have seen Hector Charlesworth, Bertram Brookers, and Lovat Dickson.~10. This 28mm version is identified by Graphic Consultants under the number GC-8000 Class.
