As is typical of Métis settlements, the land is divided into long and narrow river lots. The historic Métis settlement on the Rivière Sale (later known as the La Salle River) became the Roman Catholic parish of St. Norbert in 1857. The parish of St. Vital, home of Louis Riel, was founded in 1860. A river lot belonging to Riel's mother, Julie Riel (née Lagimodière), can be seen on this map.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Information additionnelle :Note générale :St. Norbert (Manitoba) (Rivière Sale) was south of the Red River Settlement at the point where the Rivière Sale (Dirty River) enters the Red River. In the 1700s, it was a seasonal gathering place for Metis to fish. The current community as established between 1822 and 1825 by former fur trade employees who settled there with their Metis families. Their primary occupations were the buffalo hunt, subsistence farming and cartage by red river cart.
It was in St. Norbert that Louis Riel organized the first Métis resistance movement of 1869 - 1870.
St. Vital is a Winnipeg (Manitoba) neighbourhood originally settled by the Métis. After 1824, the Métis population spread about eight kilometers south of St. Boniface along both sides of the Red River. The area's Métis boatmen and buffalo hunters lived on river lots farms.Données mathématiques sur les documents :Scale 1:23,760Note sur les autres formats physiques disponibles :The microfiche version is NMC11783Note sur les dates de création :This map was surveyed in April 1874.
