Notice descriptive – Détails Date(s) :1917, [1930, 1946].Lieu de création :OntarioÉtendue :117 mapsLangue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Consists of Communication and Route Maps ; Intelligence Maps ; Artillery Maps ; Trench Maps ; Operational Maps and Secondary Documents .Information additionnelle :Note générale :The third battle of Ypres was launched by British and Australian/New Zealand Divisions on July 31st 1917. The intent was to use the Ypres salient to break through the German lines and seize the Belgium coast. The plan appealed to the British Commander-in- Chief, General Douglas Haig, who was convinced that the Germans could be defeated in Flanders. It also had the support of British naval chiefs since it promised to curtail some of the German U-boat activity against Britain, especially operations which originated from bases in Belgium.
Although the opening engagements south of Ypres at Wytschaete and Messines proved extremely successful, the British soon found themselves hopelessly bogged down in the waterlogged terrain at Passchendaele. In early October, Haig called on the Canadian Corps to assist in the capture of the Ridge. The Corps launched their attack on October 26th. The mud made daily advances of anything over 100 yards extremely difficult. Further attacks were launched again on October 30th and yet again on November 6th. By mid November the Canadian Corps had gained the Ridge and had moved the Allied line forward about five miles, a significant advance for trench warfare. Unfortunately, the cost in casualties was tremendous and the battle failed to secure Haig's anticipated break through the German lines.

The present organization in sub-series was devised to accommodate maps found in other fonds and collections, therefore, the list below will include maps that may not be ordered from the present record. Researchers should consult any alternate MIKAN record number that appears below. Maps marked by the letters WWI do belong to the original collection and may be ordered here. Please note though that almost all the maps are available on microfiche and may be consulted on the premises directly from self-serve cabinets.
