Notice descriptive – Détails Sous-série comprend :1 description(s) de niveau inférieurVoir description(s) de niveau inférieurDate(s) :1917-1924.Lieu de création :OntarioÉtendue :25 mapsLangue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Consists of administrative maps; Artillery Maps ; Trench Maps and Secondary Documents.Information additionnelle :Note générale :A long, low ridge north of Arras, France, Vimy was an important link in the German defence system. The Canadian assault on the Ridge began April 9th 1917 and continued for about five days. Their victory was decisive, gaining more ground, more guns, and more prisoners than any previous British operation. Both British and French regiments had tried to take the Ridge earlier in the war but were unsuccessful. The Canadian victory followed almost six months of intensive planning and training, which to some extent is reflected in the early dates of some of the maps listed in this section. The Canadians made very effective use of their artillery in the days leading up to the battle and during the advance itself. This explains the increase in the number of artillery maps listed here in comparison to previous battles.
(The preceeding is an extract from Jeffrey Murray's "Guide to Maps of the First World War")Données mathématiques sur les documents :Scales differ.Note structurée de contenu :The original World War I map collection was constituted from various sources at a time when adequate records on provenance were not preserved by the then Public Archives. The present organization in sub-series was devised to accommodate maps found in other fonds and collections, therefore, the list below will include maps that may not be ordered from the present record. Researchers should consult any alternate MIKAN record number that appears below. Maps marked by the letters WWI do belong to the original collection and may be ordered here. Please note though that almost all the maps are available on microfiche and may be consulted on the premises directly from self-serve cabinets.
