Fonds consists of prints of photographs taken by Brian Wood on various trips to the prairies of Alberta and Saskatchewan between 1989 and 1999. The prints show a variety of subjects. Typical subjects are either landscapes or specific architectural features, such as churches, abandoned homesteads and schoolhouses as well as grain elevators and ferries. The collection also includes several more general street scenes taken in small towns and villages in Alberta and Saskatchewan. With few exceptions the photographs do not show the human figure. The collection serves as excellent documentation of an area that was going through severe economic change. Many of the buildings photographed by Wood were in a state of disrepair and many no longer exist.

The silver geltin prints were made by Trevor Martin, a professional printer and friend of Brian Wood. The verso of each print includes detailed information about the location where the photo was taken (often including GPS co-ordinates) and the date on which the image was taken. The verso of each print is also inscribed with technical information related to the type of camera and film used, as well as technical information related to the printing process.

Trevor Martin selected the images from the negatives which were made available to him by Brian Wood. Martin printed each image he selected without cropping the image, in order to provide the maximum amount of documentary information.
Each print is signed by both Brian Wood and Trevor Martin.

Wood, Brian, 1941- : Brian Wood (1941- ) is a Canadian amateur photographer based in Vancouver B.C. He has been interested in photography since the 1960s. In the mid-1970s Brian Wood met Trevor Martin, a professional photographer and printer, who was then working in photographic supply store in Vancouver. Martin and Wood became friends and together they took numerous trips to remote locations in both Canada and the United States, with the intention of creating photographic documentation of the areas they visited. These trips would typically last between four to six weeks and frequently resulted in the production of a large number of photographs.
