Fonds consists of correspondence of Thomas Aston Coffin, member of a prominent Boston loyalist family, with his mother Mrs. William Coffin, his sister Margaret Coffin, his brother Francis Coffin, and Francis's widow Matilda de Clairville Coffin. Thomas and his brothers were banished from Massachusetts during the Revolution, but he continued to correspond with his mother, who remained in Boston. Thomas Coffin was General Guy Carleton's secretary during the war and during Carleton's service as governor of Lower Canada. His letters concern family matters for the most part, with some discussion of other loyalist families during and after the Revolution. Only occasional references are made to relations between the United States and Great Britain. Also included is Thomas Coffin's account book, 1792-1797, with additional accounts kept by family members, 1811-1826.

Coffin, Thomas Aston, Sir, 1754-1810 : Sir Thomas Aston Coffin, colonial administrator, a native of Boston, Mass., was secretary to Guy Carleton, as commander-in-chief, 1782-1783, and as Governor of Quebec, 1786-1794. He was Civil Secretary of Lower Canada, 1791-1793, and Comptroller of Accounts. He was made a baronet in 1804.
