AMAL is a fiction feature directed by Richie Mehta based on the director's short film by the same title. The film takes place on the dusty, sweltering streets of New Delhi, where each day is a struggle to survive. Amal is a simple, hard-working and unassuming autorickshaw driver who enjoys chauffeuring his often unpleasant customers around the city. While Amal goes about his daily routine on the bustling Indian roads, a gravely-ill elderly billionaire, G.K. Jayaram, is re-examining his failing legacy. Not wanting to leave any inheritance to his ungrateful egotistical children, nor to his greedy colleagues whom he sees as money-sucking leeches, the old man decides to mask himself as a vagabond. His purpose is to find the two things his money has never brought him - hope for humanity and peace for his soul. Meanwhile, Amal is involved in a terrifying accident with a young beggar girl, Priya, which leaves her in serious condition. Compelled by his kind nature, Amal decides to do whatever it takes to raise enough money to save Priya's life. In this compassionate task, he is helped by the beautiful merchant Pooja. In the meantime, G.K. Jayaram, in his new role of a street tramp with an attitude, finds that his encounters with various people of New Delhi seem more confrontational than cordial. But, when he finds himself, almost by chance, in Amal's rickshaw, he is touched by the driver's kindness, which restores the old man's faith. Some time later, Jayaram dies, and his children are shocked when they find out that the inheritor of their father's big fortune is the grubby autorickshaw driver, Amal. Vivek, Jayaram's deviously volatile son, and Suresh, his estranged best friend and long-term assistant, form a bond to ruin, by all means possible, Amal's chances of claiming the inheritance. <1h 43mn 46s>
