News conference held by Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, ice hockey player Wayne Gretzky, Vancouver Mayor Larry Campbell, and British Columbia Premier Gordon Campbell in the Hilton Hotel in Prague, Czech Republic, on the occasion of the announcement of the awarding of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to Vancouver. Included subjects are the IOC members’ high expectations for the Vancouver games, the Whistler venues for the skiing and sliding sports, the work done by the bidding committee, concerns regarding the political rather than sports issues of such a vote for a host city, Rogge’s affirmation that the IOC is mostly formed of retired athletes thus excluding a political motivation for a vote, Vancouver’s intent to hold a big celebration for the games, the surprise created by the strong bid of Korean city Pyong Chang which was seen as the underdog, the attributes shown by Vancouver to win the bid such as tight security measures, government support, citizen support and political stability, an affirmation that the New York City bid for 2012 Summer Olympic Games will not be endangered by another North American city hosting the 2010 games, concerns over the weather in Vancouver, and the wish to see gold medals for Canada won on its own soil. <30mn>
