THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN is a Canada-Denmark feature film co-production set in and around Canada's remote northeastern Arctic during the early years of the twentieth century. It tells the story of the last great Iglulik shaman by the name of Aua, and his beautiful headstrong daughter, Apak, who are faced with a difficult choice between the path of traditional shamanism and that of Christianity. The story starts in January of 1922 as Knud Rasmussen, a Danish-Greenlandic explorer/scientist, and his protege, a young anthropologist by the name of Therkel Mathiassen, visit a remote camp of the great shaman. To the explorers, Aua's camp looks like a heavenly oasis bursting with physical vigor and spiritual vitality, an arctic Garden of Eden distinguished by passionate generosity and joyful intelligence. What the Europeans fail to realize, however, is that, beside being faced with the challenges of weather-induced famine, this peaceful stronghold of beauty stands surrounded by the powerful forces of the new century - the introduction of the Inuit-language Christian holy books and the Western commerce culture that will irrevocably change Inuit life. Very soon, the isolated fortress of tranquility will become increasingly dependent on foreign trade goods and will have to face the first police investigation of a murder of a white man. THE JOURNALS OF KNUD RASMUSSEN is a profound and moving story of a culture forced to confront a changing world. It challenges the traditional filmic language of cause-effect narrativity and presents a fragmented mosaic/collage of image and sound, often implementing non-traditional devices such as direct mode of address and juxtaposition of extremes as seen in, for instance, directors' violent cuts between blinding, ice-reflected sunlight and close, lamp-lit darkness. <1h 52mn 53s>
