Interview of Jennie Eaton of North York. Her husband is present during the interview, and ends the interview by disconnecting the tape recorder from the electrical outlet. Before this happens she manages to talk about: open-air streetcars with a big hook on the back; going to Davisville school; childhood games such as hopscotch and skipping rope; working for Fairweathers; going to the town hall to work for the soldiers two nights a week; her job as a fur operator, making coats, for 7½ years; not understanding the war; her view that men enlisted in the military in the First World War because they needed jobs; a story that people in England sawed knobs off fences to make bullets; her postwar job at Gillespie’s, where she got paid 50 cents a week more; better hours and no Saturday work when the union came; her support for the union because it gave workers shorter hours and more money; union dues of 35 cents a month; back to wartime work, and filling haversacks with such things as pens, wool, needles and thread, for the soldiers.

1. The interviews took place in 1974 and resulted in the publication of a book entitled "The Great War and Canadian Society" edited by Daphne Read - copyright 1978 - New Hogtown Press, Toronto.~2. Release forms, data sheets, and summary analysis/transcripts are available in binders labelled Opportunities for Youth - War and Canadian Society in VSA's audio-visual section.~3. Part of a series of recorded interviews with elderly citizens who lived in Canada during the period of World War I. The interview material consists of their opinions and observations about the war, the war years, and the effect on Canadian society during and after WWI.~4. The interviewee signed an agreement giving consent for a recording of this interview to be placed in the Public Archives of Canada for the purposes of historical research and also signed a publication agreement allowing any transcribed portions of the interview to be used in the book under the condition that no full names, addresses or phone numbers would be published.~5. Subject description is based on information found in the fact sheet, deposit agreement, publication agreement and summary analysis.
