Interview of Reg Bullock about: leaving the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in the 1940s; the Trotskyist movement in the 1950s; the Communist Party; the impact of McCarthyism on the Canadian Labour Congress and the Canadian trade union movement; pressure during the 1950s to stop Communists from holding office in trade unions; the New Democratic Party; efforts to reorient the CCF more toward the goals of the Trotskyist movement; the difficulty of recruiting in Canada; more successful recruiting in the U.S. among young people opposed to the Vietnam war; recruiting in France; the holding action being fought through recruiting by the Fourth International; the difficulties faced by the movement in the 1950s and into the 1960s; the aging membership; the petit bourgeois values of the education system; his annoyance at the squalor of communes he has seen in Canada, where inhabitants reject all responsibility for their children and their animals; a disturbed woman in Calgary; the situation in the international movement; disputes, chicanery and manoeuvres related to the Socialist Workers Party; the Revolutionary Workers Party; Ross Dowson; the Second World War; Stalinists; the view held by some members of the movement that World War Three was imminent and that the workers’ revolution had to wait until the outcome; the role of the Communist Party in the trade unions; the difficulties faced by the Trotskyist movement in maintaining independence while working within social democratic organizations; disputes over whether to rejoin the CCF; the publication Labor Forum and its cessation; the launch of the Revolutionary Workers League; strategies such as deep entry, which means keeping a low profile; Bill Whitney; the Pabloists; the situation among the Vancouver Trotskyists; Paddy Ferguson; the writings of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and Leon Trotsky; democratic socialism, its benefits and dangers; the relationship to the international secretariat; the decision to launch the Socialist Information in Centre in Vancouver and a similar centre in Toronto; the Socialist Educational League; his blaming Ross Dowson for tension between the Vancouver and Toronto branches over the organizational structure and problems with the Vancouver facilities. <1h>
