This series consists of records created and accumulated by Maxwell Yalden during his term as Commissioner of the Official Languages Commission 1977-1984. The records reflect Yalden's responsibilities for the promotion of the French language in Canada and documents various issues such as bilingual positions language requirements in the Public Service, charter of rights, language reform and constitution, education, etc. The series is arranged by subject and in chronological order within.

The series contains meetings and letters with federal and provincial prime ministers, ministers, leaders of the oppositions, parliamentarians, officials and others from 1977 to 1982 and include's mainly lists of items to be discussed at meetings, however, some additional information provided prior or after the meetings may be inserted; a significant number of speeches given by Yalden to national and international governments and private organisations from 1977 to 1984 are arranged under two groups "Speeches - Discours" and "Miscellaneous Presentations - Présentations diverses", a list provided in each file gives the names of the organization, place, date and in some case the title of the paper, the titles of the speeches given in both English and French does not necessarily mean that the documents exist in both languages usually the documents are in the language that the paper was given in; Yalden's speeches and articles published in journals and newspapers from 1978 to 1984 are arranged under two groups, "journals" and "newspapers", a title list is provided in each file; Yalden's exposés to students from 1978 to 1983 and a title list is provided in the file; newspaper articles by Conrad Black and Robert Maxwell on their differences regarding Quebec's language law, 1989; and copies of newspaper clippings 1978-1982.

The series includes lists of discussion points, agendas, memoranda, correspondence, notes, speeches, newspaper clippings.
