Chatman, Stephen, 1950- : Né à Faribault, au Minnesota, Stephen Chatman a étudié avec Joseph Wood et Walter Aschaffenburg au Oberlin College Conservatory of Music ainsi qu'avec Ross Lee Finney, Leslie Bassett, William Bolcom et Eugene Kurtz à l'University of Michigan où il a obtenu son doctorat en musique en 1977.
Chatman est reconnu à l'échelle internationale en tant que compositeur de musique pour chorale, orchestre et piano. Ses productions créatrices, qui comprennent de nombreuses oeuvres d'envergure, sont déjà considérables et il a apporté une contribution particulièrement importante au répertoire musical pour choeur. Sa centaine d'oeuvres, dont plus de 500 000 exemplaires imprimés ont été vendus, sont interprétées fréquemment. Ses oeuvres pour orchestres, y compris des commandes des orchestres symphoniques de Vancouver, Toronto, Edmonton, Windsor et Madison ainsi que de la SRC, ont été interprétées et enregistrées par l'orchestre symphonique de la BBC, le Berlin Radio Orchestra, le Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, le Hong Kong Philharmonic, les orchestres symphoniques de Sydney, Séoul, San Francisco, St. Louis, Detroit, Dallas, New World, Québec, Calgary, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Î.-P.-É. et Terre-Neuve.
Chatman a reçu de nombreuses commandes par l'intermédiaire du Conseil des arts du Canada, de la SRC, du British Columbia Arts Council et du National Endowment for the Arts des États-Unis, y compris des oeuvres pour le Vancouver New Music, la Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) de Montréal, le Festival international de musique de chambre d'Ottawa, le pianiste Marc-André Hamelin, la contralto Maureen Forrester, le violoniste Andrew Dawes, le Vancouver Chamber Choir, le Canadian Children's Opera Chorus et le Banff Centre.
Parmis ses oeuvres enregistrées, mentionnons deux collections pour chorale interprétées par le Vancouver Chamber Choir, "Due North" (Centrediscs) et "Due West" (CBC Records), une collection de musique de chambre, "Vancouver Visions" (Centrediscs), une collection pour orchestre, "Proud Music of the Storm" (Centrediscs) et des pièces instrumentales sous étiquette C.R.I., CBC Records, Naxos, Globe, Crystal, Skylark, Arsis et Frederick Harris Music Celebration Series.
En tant que professeur de composition et d'orchestration, de codirecteur du nouvel ensemble musical University of British Columbia Contemporary Players et directeur de la UBC School of Music Composition Division, Stephen Chatman a enseigné à toute une génération d'éminents compositeurs canadiens. Il a siégé à de nombreux comités de sélection du Conseil des arts du Canada et à des comités de sélection lors de concours nationaux de composition s'adressant aux étudiants. Il a aussi assumé les fonctions de président du comité de sélection du Concours national des jeunes compositeurs de la SRC en 2001.
Il est le seul Nord-américain à avoir remporté trois fois de suite le BMI Awards to Student Composers (1974-76). Il a également été le récipiendaire de la bourse d'études Charles Ives de l'American Academy of Arts and Letters, d'une subvention du fonds M.B. Rockefeller et d'une bourse d'études Fulbright des États-Unis pour étudier avec Karlheinz Stockhausen au Hochschule für Musik à Cologne.
En 1988-89, Stephen Chatman est devenu le premier "compositeur en résidence" de la Colombie-Britannique. En 2003, il est l'un des trois compositeurs canadiens à avoir visité Beijing et Shanghai dans le cadre du "First Exchange of Canadian and Chinese Composers", parrainé par la Chinese Musicians' Association (CMA) et le consulat général de la Chine à Vancouver. Il était le "compositeur en résidence" auprès de l'Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada en 2004. La même année, il est devenu le premier compositeur à recevoir le Dorothy Somerset Award for Performance and Development in the Visual and Creative Arts de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique. Il est également le premier canadien à être retenu pour la sélection finale du concours international BBC Masterprize pour son oeuvre "Tara's Dream".
Stephen Chatman est compositeur agréé du Centre de musique canadienne, ancien président du Vancouver New Music et membre de la Ligue canadienne des compositeurs, de la SOCAN, de la Society of Composers, Inc., et du American Music Center.
