Le fonds comprend des écrits divers produits entre 1976 et 2002. Il est constitué de neuf séries : 1. Poésie; 2. Essais; 3. Textes publiés en revues; 4. Textes de jeunesse, inédits et travaux universitaires; 5. Carnets, cahiers, calepins et agendas; 6. Activités professionnelles; 7. Correspondance; 8. Traductions et écrits sur l'oeuvre de Serge Patrice Thibodeau; 9. Amnistie internationale.
Les documents de ce fonds, riches d'une information très dense, sont une précieuse ressource pour la recherche en études littéraires, en particulier dans les champs de la génétique textuelle et des lectures biographiques. Révélateurs des méthodes de travail de Serge Patrice Thibodeau, ils témoignent de l'évolution de son écriture et de sa démarche d'écrivain, sur une période de vingt ans, depuis sa période punk/new wave du début des années 1980 jusqu'à celle de sa quête spirituelle qui a donné lieu aux oeuvres des années 1990.
Le fonds renferme les nombreux états de manuscrits des dix principaux recueils de poésie publiés par Serge Patrice Thibodeau : "La Septième chute" (1990), "Le Cycle de Prague" (1992), "Le Passage des glaces" (1992), "Nous, l'étranger" (1995), "Le Quatuor de l'errance" suivi de "La Traversée du désert" (1995), "Nocturnes" (1997), "Dans la Cité" suivi de "Pacífica" (1997), "Le Roseau" (1997 et 2000), "Seuils" (2002), "Du haut de mon arbre" (2002).
Ce fonds comprend plusieurs inédits de jeunesse dont certains écrits en anglais; des livrets d'oratorio; des livres uniques écrits et reliés par l'auteur; des travaux universitaires inédits; et les premières versions du scénario du film "Le Désir et l'Argile" réalisé en collaboration avec le cinéaste d'origine irakienne Baz Shamoun en 1997. Le fonds rassemble aussi plusieurs dossiers témoignant de la participation de Serge Patrice Thibodeau à des événements littéraires et culturels tant au Canada et au Québec qu'en France, en Pologne, en République tchèque et en Slovaquie. Il comporte des dossiers de presse relatifs à ses publications; de la correspondance avec des maisons d'édition, des organismes et des personnalités du monde politique et culturel, ainsi que de la correspondance personnelle. Le fonds renferme également des dossiers qui rendent compte de l'importance de l'engagement de Serge Patrice Thibodeau au sein d'Amnistie internationale. Y sont également conservés plusieurs états manuscrits des deux essais publiés en livres par Serge Patrice Thibodeau, "L'Appel des mots : Lecture de Saint-Denys Garneau" et "La Disgrâce de l'humanité : Essai sur la torture", et quelques versions de quatre courts essais publiés dans des périodiques ou des catalogues d'exposition : "Enluminures, La fierté acadienne se donne désormais des airs d'internationalisme"; "De la liberté d'expression"; et "Poésie acadienne". On y trouve aussi deux états d'écriture d'"Écrire contre Écrire sur (de l'auto censure)". Enfin, le fonds rassemble une quarantaine de carnets, cahiers, et calepins dans lesquels sont consignées des notes préliminaires et les toutes premières versions de certaines oeuvres de Serge Patrice Thibodeau, surtout des poèmes. Ces carnets et cahiers contiennent aussi des écrits intimes, des prières en français et en arabe, des journaux de voyages, des notes de lectures, des états de comptes, des budgets de voyage et quelques agendas témoignant en partie de l'organisation de la vie quotidienne, professionnelle, culturelle et sociale de Serge Patrice Thibodeau.
