This material documents June Callwood's work for International PEN on behalf of writers and freedom of expression, largely PEN's campaign against censorship, her membership in the executive of the Canadian chapter (PEN Canada), and her role chairing the organizing committee for PEN's 54th World Congress held in Toronto and Montreal. Her files hold a first draft of a PEN brief addressing Bill C-54 on pornography; records showing the genesis of the Censorwatch project; PEN's "rapid action" response to the murder of journalists in Turkey; its response to controversies surrounding Salman Rushdie, David Irving, and "The Valour and the Horror"; minutes of the executive committee, Board of Directors, and Annual General Meetings; and records of the Writers-in-Prison committee, which include letters from George Galt and Paul D. Copeland, and notes on consultations with External Affairs.

The records pertaining to Toronto and Montreal's hosting of PEN's 54th World Congress in 1989 contain media releases, reports, notes on guests of honour, budgets, programs, clippings, and minutes of meetings. They also document a verbal confrontation at the gala opening at Roy Thomson Hall between Callwood and Marlene Nourbese Philip, who as part of Vision 21 was protesting the alleged exclusion of writers of colour from the event. In this respect, letters from Timothy Findley and Lisa Steele are of interest. There is also material relating to the 1986 World Congress in New York City.
