CBS News Chief Washington correspondant Howard K. Smith narrates this documentary film on the international water crisis. Initial sequence on the abuses of the water supply in antiquity with shots of: mideast deserts; the ruins of the city of Babylon and tower of Babel; Greek and Roman aqueducts; windmils to pump water in Crete; stone rice terrace in the Phillipines; Inca water reservoirs in Peru; and comments from Professor Ritchie-Calder and archaelogist [Nelson Gluck]. Further discussion focuses on modern day problems of water supply and management in the United States accompanied by clips of: the Hoover Dam; construction of the Owens Valley pipeline at the turn of the century; the Colorado River Aqueduct; the use of water by steel mills and other industries; maps and graphics of water requirements and resources, and dry water reservooirs. Additional comments on the topic from: Dr. Everett Howe of the University of Southern California; Dr. [Roger Revell], director of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography; Dr. [Able Woollman] and Senator Kerr. Shots of the United States Supreme Court building accompany an outline of the court decision as to the water rights of the Colorado River. ~California Governor Edmund Brown and Governor Paul Fannin of Arizona address the topic. The escalating water pollution problem is explored with shots of sewage and industrial outlets and scenes of polluted rivers and streams. Comment from Secretary of the Interior Stuart Udall. Dr. Malcolm Ade [Eesha] of India discusses the problems of water supply in the third world and the program outlines some of the water desalinization developments currently under research. Sequences of life raft survival kits; water works in Kuwait; purification plants in the U.S.; icebergs; irrigation projects in Pakistan's Indus River Valley; agriculture in India; and Israeli scientist Alexander [Zarkin] explaining the methods of water purification through freezing. <108mn 26s>
